The Basic Purpose Of The Position:

Operate all types of equipment used to lay, repair, and maintain track for standard or narrow-gauge railroad equipment used in regular railroad service or in plant yards, quarries, sand and gravel pits, and mines.

An Equipment Operator will operate several types of heavy equipment, such as backhoes, tractors, rail-mounted tamping machines, brooms, graders, and ballast cleaning machines.



Operate various types of equipment associated with removing, replacing and repairing rail track.

Remove, replace and repair various types of track and track components (e.g. ties, rails bars, etc.)

Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge Install and repair street and railroad crossings

Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way Spray switches, angle bars and joints with various lubricants Perform housekeeping duties as required by site management;

Must be regularly available to work overtime per day or per week, weekends and Holidays as well as travel up to periods of two weeks at a time as the company determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs;

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License

  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations
  • May require random testing for drug and/or alcohol
  • Must pass all required assessments
  • Must pass a background screening
  • May require a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical agility test

Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job.  Road & Rail Services requires a post-offer motor vehicle reference check, background check, and employment and military (if applicable) verification required.
