The basic purpose of position: 

Perform the essential inspection and repair functions necessary to prepare railcars for transportation. Associates designated as a "Senior Mechanic or Senior Repairman" have mastered the skills required of a "Junior Mechanic or Junior Repairman" and are able to perform essentially error-free work without direct supervision.


We expect all associates to be committed to a high standard of safety, be willing and able to comply with all safety policies/rules and willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Individuals performing this function must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Job Performance without equipment damage is essential to meeting our customers' safety, quality and production requirements.


  • Inspect railcar for serviceability along with damage/fatigue; 
  • Identify repairs that can be performed by Road & Rail Services; 
  • Notify management of unserviceable railcars that can not be repaired by Road & Rail Services; 
  • Perform authorized repairs to customer and AAR specifications; 
  • Lubricate railcars and stencil lubrication date on the railcar; 
  • Accurately record, either electronically or in writing, all repairs; 
  • Assist, as required, in the "prepping" of railcars, this may include the use of backpack blowers, push brooms, vacuums, and various scraping devices remove all debris and other non-hazardous contaminants from inside the railcar; 
  • Assist, as required, in repairing defective vehicle securement devices; 
  • Inspect and assist in opening and closing railcar doors; 
  • Determine if railcar or vehicle securement devices need lubrication, if lubrication is required, assist in the lubrication of hinge decks, end doors, ratchet, chain or steel chock vehicle securement devices; 
  • Qualified associate may be required to perform and document customer preventive maintenance inspections/repairs, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 215 Freight Car Safety Standards and/or CFR 232 Brake Systems Safety Standards for Freight Cars; 
  • Operate various types of mechanical equipment – including small farm type tractors, all terrain vehicles, pick-up trucks, and panel vans; 
  • Maintain accountability and maintenance for all assigned equipment; 
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required by site management;

Experience Requirements:

  • Stick Welding 

Skills, Licenses, Certification, and/or Special Training:

  • Must maintain a valid state driver's license if required to operate company equipment; 
  • Must be able to qualify for D15.1 American Welding Society (AWS) certification; 

Physical, Mental & Sensory Requirements:


  • Ability to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and noisy conditions;
  • Must meet OSHA respirator use requirements;
  • Ability to frequently tolerate fuel and exhaust vapors up to OSHA prescribed levels;
  • Ability to frequently operate gasoline powered air blower using a constant lateral sweeping motion with your arms;
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 35 lbs on your back climbing railcar ladders;
  • Ability to occasionally climb, using various types of ladders, to heights in excess of 16 feet;
  • Ability to occasionally lift above shoulder height a weight of up to 50 pounds;
  • Ability to occasionally carry up to 60 pounds;
  • Ability to occasionally work in areas with limited lighting;
  • Ability to constantly wear company prescribed welding safety equipment;
  • Ability to constantly use bending, squatting, twisting, and walking motions throughout the entire work shift;
  • Ability to constantly stand for periods of time greater than 2 hours;
  • Ability to occasionally work in area with less that 24 inches of vertical clearance;
  • Must be able to hear work or safety instructions verbally communicated in a normal speaking voice;
  • Must possess normal depth perception and have a normal peripheral vision in both eyes;
  • Must be able to work independently;
  • Must be able to properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment; Additional requirement for associates working on Multi-Level Railcars:
  • Ability to frequently open railcar end doors using pulling back force of 90 lbs and pushing force of 68 lbs;
  • Possess the equilibrium and ability to frequently cross 3-4 foot open spans at heights up to 16 feet


Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job. Road & Rail Services requires a post-offer motor vehicle reference check, background check, and employment & military (if applicable) verification required.
